Branding myself

April 22, 2009

One of the side projects I’ve been working on as I find my writing groove is launching a professional Web site.

After working with the guys at Upstatement, a design and development firm, the site launched this week at alexisgrant.com.

I wanted my own Web site for two reasons:

* To make it easy for literary agents and potential future employers to find everything about me — writing samples, resume, contact information and links to my blogs — all in one place.

* So I could easily turn it into a book promotion site when my travel memoir is published. (Yeah, I’m a little ahead of myself here, but I like to be prepared.)

As an added benefit, the Web site is helping me create my own personal brand, which apparently is a trend these days. The New York Times recently ran a story about personal branding, and several blogs including this one by Dan Schawbel explain how to go about creating an online identity as part of making a name for yourself.

Having a Web presence not only helps you get the word out about your skills, it also shows you know how to use networking technology that’s important for so many jobs. And let’s be honest. All this Web stuff — blogs, Twitter, personal Web site — is kinda fun.

      Lexi,
Great web site! The articles you wrote for the Chronicle, the travel blog and the amazing pictures really shows the depth of your experiences and should serve you well in your pursuit of a best seller.
      Stay focused and good luck
