Writers’ Roundup: January 6

January 6, 2012

It’s the first Friday of 2012!

It also happens to be… my birthday. As of today, I’m officially in my early-30s, which is rather terrifying.

Thankfully, I have plenty to look forward to this year: my sister’s wedding, launching my first digital course, traveling to Latin America, attending WDS for the first time, and best of all, and hanging out with YOU ALL!

Links to keep you busy this weekend:

  • Have you resolved to get in shape this year? Great tips (know I need ’em!) from Leo Babauta at Zenhabits on how to make fitness a habit.
  • Advice from Sean Ogle on what it takes to become a slasher long-term. “They’re usually good writers,” he says.
  • Admittedly, I’m obsessed with self-improvement, which I’ve always assumed helped me succeed. But Jennifer Gresham explains why it could ruin my life.
  • Check out this writer who’s being sued for his thousands of Twitter followers, via Mashable.
  • Literary agent Janet Reid shares four questions you should answer if you’re writing non-fiction.
  • Super helpful: If you’re self-employed and in need of health insurance, Kerry Hannon at Forbes shares how to find quality coverage at reasonable prices.

Finally, one of the startups I work with, Brazen Careerist, is offering a two-week bootcamp on How to Get a Job You Will Love. Figured a few of you might be interested.

See you here next week!

    • Happy New Year AND Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy birthday and congrats on the ProBlogger listing. Your blog is one of my favorites.
I loved backpacking through Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Unsolicited recommendations: Best beach and wildlife = Manuel Antonio National Park. Best hiking/horseback ride to a pretty waterfall = La Fortuna. Best hot springs = Bottom of Arenal volcano. Best zip line through cloud forest = Monteverde. San Jose is nice/safe for a Central American capital. Managua not so much.
In Nicaragua, I didn’t love Granada (a major tourist destination), maybe just spend a day there. If you go to highlands, lots of great Sandinista history there. Museum of Heroes and Martyrs in Esteli is very interesting.

Happy birthday! Don’t worry, the 30s only get better, and the 40s are better still! I just love your Roundups–thanks for sharing such great stuff. And congrats on making the list of 20 Bloggers to Watch in 2012 on Problogger.net.

      Aloha Alexis,

First of all, Happy B-day!!! Very memorable day, your bday and Three Kings day.

Nonetheless, first time on your blog, I’m sure I’ll be digging deeper throughout the weekend as I’m enjoying it thus far. Perhaps you’ve already mentioned it in other posts, but where in Latin America are you headed to? Being originally from El Salvador and being fortunate enough to have travel to almost every country in S.A., I’d love to know more about your upcoming trip.

      Alex

Hey Alex — Thanks for stopping by! My readers know I’ve been thinking about a trip, but I haven’t yet told everyone I’m going to Nicaragua and Costa Rica next month! Got a post planned on that for next week.

        • Alex in Maui says:

Kudos, Alexis. I think you’ll have a great time. I haven’t been to CR or Nica in years, but I’d strongly suggest Jaco as it is a great little surfing outpost, has a good nightlife, good food, and people are super nice. Keep in mind though, it has become a bit of a tourist destination (and with that, prices go up). I look forward to your next posts.
