I’m in a season of finishing.
It took a friend noticing that to help me see it clearly, and her simple remark was such a gift.
I didn’t want this year to be about finishing. I wanted it to be about starting. Starting a new business, starting a new pregnancy, starting Retreat & Create.
But instead, 2020 gave me finishing: finishing our home renovation and series of moves (we’ve moved three times in the last 3.5 years); finishing an e-book I started writing with my dad eight years ago; finishing my years with The Penny Hoarder as it transfers to new ownership; finishing my build of The Write Life as I prepare to sell it in January; and — I won’t pretend I’m happy about this one — finishing the decade of my thirties.
For much of this year, I lamented the loss of not having the creative and physical bandwidth to start the things I envisioned. But perhaps this is 2020’s true gift to me, that I was meant to finish things instead. Perhaps 2020 knew I needed to clear my plate and create space before starting something new.
I like seeing things through this new lens; it feels satisfying rather than disappointing. Now I’m looking around and asking myself, what else can I finish?
