Guide Launch! How to Take a Career Break to Travel

October 17, 2011

Wow. Big day here!

Today I’m launching How to Take a Career Break to Travel, a step-by-step guide to making your dream trip happen.

This has been a long time coming. I left on my own Big Trip in June 2008 — which is when I started this blog — and backpacked solo through seven African countries. But it wasn’t until after I wrote a travel memoir about the experience that I had the idea for this practical guide.

I began writing the guide more than a year ago during a residency at The Hambidge Center, and back then I thought it would be my second traditionally published book.

That was before the ebook revolution rocked my world. Once I realized I loved creating digital products and selling them off this site, where all of the responsibility (and profits) fall to me, I decided this book would become my second eguide instead. Now it’s finally ready to see the light of day!

But back to my six months in Africa.

That trip catapulted me to where I am today.

It was the trip of a lifetime, that’s for sure. But even more importantly, that trip helped me realize I could do anything I put my mind to in this world. Having that Leap under my belt made it easier to take other risks: write a book, start a business and leave my day job to pursue that business full time. That’s the awesome thing about Leaps. Once you take one, you hunger for another.

I believe a career break is one of the best kinds of Leaps out there. It’s a chance to grow, personally and professionally. A chance to cross items off your bucket list, to learn about other people and places — and about yourself. A chance to really live.

Which is probably why so many of us dream about taking a Big Trip. So why haven’t you made it happen? Oh, wait, I know the answer to that: because it’s easy to drown in BUTs.

BUT I don’t have the money. BUT I can’t leave my job. BUT my family doesn’t approve.

This guide will help you overcome those BUTs. It will help you figure out how a career break could fit into your life, without ruining your career or going underwater on your mortgage. It will help you realize that if you dream about traveling, you can actually do it.

The guide sells for $39, but for this week only, until Friday at 7 p.m. EST, you can download it for $29 instead. And if you’re interested in becoming an affiliate, that’s an option, too.

Why the sale price during launch week? Because I want this guide to be accessible to anyone who dreams of seeing the world. I want you to take it and run with it. I want you to kick some travel ass and then inspire the rest of us to get out there, too.

Here's what you'll learn in How to Take a Career Break to Travel:

  • How to save enough money to take your Big Trip

  • Advice from other career-breakers who have traveled successfully long-term

… and lots more.

This 90-page guide answers both practical and big-picture questions people asked after I left my job to backpack through Africa. How much does a trip like this cost? What's the best way to get up the guts to leave your job and apartment? Will traveling the world really change my life? (The answer: A huge, resounding YES.)

Whether you dream of volunteering in Africa, backpacking through Europe or road-tripping in Australia, don't put off that adventure any longer. Use this guide as your first step toward seeing the world.
