Writers’ Roundup: October 7
October 7, 2011
Happy fall!
I’m writing from my parents’ house in upstate New York, where I’m hanging out with Cooper (the dog I brought home from a writer’s colony) while they’re on vacation. So far, this has proven to be one of the best perks of becoming self-employed; I can work from wherever is convenient!
Thought-provoking links from this week:
- Emily Harris writes about fall fun for the deranged. Now THAT’S how to blog about your life in a way that’s interesting and engaging, not to mention hilarious.
- The Online Journalism Reviews asks, What does job security mean for a journalist? The interesting part about this piece is that so much of it can apply to workers in any industry. Robert Niles writes: “To me, job security means working for someone who I know will never fire me. In my experience, with this industry in this economy, there’s only one person I trust fits that description: Me.”
- Writer Thursday Bram offers some calculations and musings on the billable hour to explain why freelancers usually don’t become millionaires. This is why today’s entrepreneurs talk so much about making their business scalable.
- Insightful piece on why people love memoirs, from Verbatim. It’s a blog that focuses on market research and social media, not memoir, which is partly what makes this interesting.
- The most important decision in your career, says Seth Godin, is what you’ll do next. Which is a great question to end on: With all of the opportunities before you, what will you decide to do today?
Enjoy the weekend!
