The Secret to Blogging

October 10, 2011

If there’s a secret to growing any blog with a personal component, it’s this:

Blog about where you want to go, not where you are.

Where you are can be interesting, entertaining even. But where you want to go engages us on a totally different level.

Because when you share where you want to go, you bring us on that journey. You let us learn as you learn. And being generous about sharing those ah-ha moments will make your blog a go-to resource on whatever you’re working toward.

Even better, looking forward will help you maintain the momentum you need to get where you want to be. Voicing your goals will make them real, even magnify them, and hold you accountable.

In other words, blogging about where you want to go will help you get there.

Alexis, you are so right! At first I thought, no one wants to read about my fits and starts as I tried something new. But, then I realized, I love to read blog posts where the writer shares triumphs and “failures” and ultimate success. So now I know it’s not only okay – but awesome – to talk about my dreams and where I want to go, even if it involved some missteps along the way 😉

    • I have never heard this suggestion before. Thank you. I’m going to start blogging about where I want to go.

    • Yes! I realize I’m a little late in catching up on your blog, but yes, yes, yes! I totally agree. I write an expat blog for the most part, and I’ve been trying to figure out what it is that makes me choose what blogs I read or don’t read in this niche. It’s definitely this… feeling part of a journey on the blogs I stick with, feeling like I’m looking at someone’s Facebook wall on the ones I don’t. So glad you put your finger on it. 🙂

    • I want to succeed that is why I need people like you for an advice. I am doing some of the things you recommended, but I have a lot of issues with maneuvering technology. I will continue to listen to your advise. I know where I am going, but I do not want to bore people to death. Thanks so much

Thanks for sharing all these posts in your last newsletter. You were right! I had missed most of them.

This is also a great strategy for bloggers who aren’t confident in their own credentials or portraying themselves as an ‘expert’ in their topic. Writing about your journey along the way of achieving your goals can help you to overcome that feeling of self-doubt. Great pointers!
