First time here? Welcome!

“Your blog is, on the surface, about writing and travel, but on a deeper level it is you exploring the life you want to live and building a career on your own terms.”                                                                                                           — Andrea James

This blog began as a place for me to chronicle my experience writing my first book, a travel memoir about backpacking solo through Africa.

But it has morphed into its own beast, like good blogs do. So while I focus on writing and careers and social media, a lot of my posts touch on life’s bigger issues, like taking leaps and following dreams and creating the life you want to live. Because whether you’re jumping into a career break or book project or some other unknown, we often share the same fears.

The word “travel” usually evokes images of visiting foreign countries. And yes, I love seeing remote corners of the world! But like each of you, I’m also traveling through life, looking forward to what’s ahead. In addition to working to publish this book, I’m creating a career on my own terms and figuring out how to fit adventure into my life.

Greetings from Ontario,Canada
I came upon your website through Joanna, she inspires me, and have to say I am so impressed that you travelled all by yourself. Finding courage to follow your dreams and now writing about it.
I wish you luck with everything and will follow you forever.

Hello,

I just read a comment of yours on Rachelle Gardner’s blog. What caught my attention was your name. But alas, you are not the Alexis Grant I know from my past.

Anyway, I am very glad I happened upon your blog. I am going to become a follower. I too love to travel and have been to Africa 3 times. Not by myself though so I’m curious about your book.

I’m also writing a memoir so I’m looking forward to reading your posts on the subject.

Thanks for a great blog.

Hi Alexis,

I wrote a memoir on scoliosis called “When Life Throws You a Curve” and really enjoy your site! Also, my bestfriend just left for Africa for a year to travel through the country working for women’s rights, and she is writing a blog about her travels. I cannot wait to read it.

On a separate note, I was wondering if you wanted to attend an event on Wednesday for Vision 2020′s 2nd Annual Congress in Chicago. Vision 2020 is a national grassroots movement for gender equity(in areas that include equal pay and sexual rights) and they are holding their 2nd Annual Congress in Chicago, Oct. 11-13. The gala is on Wednesday, Oct 12 at 4:30 pm at the Chase Tower Auditorium and there will also be a performance by Second City and a buffet after the show. As a fellow writer and journalist, I am hoping you would be interested in attending and possibly covering the event. I have some VIP seats available and would appreciate it if you would please let me know if you would like to come by tomorrow evening. Also, I am looking for one or two other interested young female journalists to experience and potentially write about this event if you have fellow Northwestern graduates or coworkers who you think would enjoy this opportunity.

Thank you,

Liz

Hi Alexis,
Way to seize the day and follow your dreams writing and traveling- two of my loves as well. I look forward to staying in touch and encouraging one another in our first books (mine is also a bit of a travel theme, “Grace Sticks: The Bumper Sticker Gospel for Restless Souls”).
All best,
Kristina
